Everyone has head of secret codes, cryptic codes, codes of silence, etc. – but what do you know about Holland Codes? John Holland was a psychologist who theorized connections between personalities and the types of work they choose – “the choice of vocation is an expression of personality”. Holland developed a six factor typology that described personalities and work environments. His interpretative model has been adopted by the U.S. Department of Labor and is used to categorize jobs into interest areas. Some job search engines used in career research and exploration allow clients to enter their Holland type in order to pull of a list of careers that match their personality code. Don’t for a minute think this is touchy-feely mumbo jumbo. The nature of jobs, the working environment, and the skills required and even the daily specialized tasks are specific to individual human characteristics. For example take a look at the 6 Holland typologies and a brief descriptor for each:
- Realistic – practical, physical, hands-on, tool-oriented
- Investigative – analytical, intellectual, scientific, explorative
- Artistic – creative, original, independent, chaotic
- Social – cooperative, supporting, helping, healing/nurturing
- Enterprising – competitive environments, leadership, persuading
- Conventional – detail-oriented, organizing, clerical
